Here | There | & Back Again
The body of work in "Here, There, and Back Again" explores the themes of movement and dislocation. As Americans, we are accustomed to traveling to visit friends and family, commuting for work, and relocating for job opportunities. This constant movement serves as the inspiration behind the exhibition. The work delves into the experience of dislocation, the process of coming and going, moving from place to place, and how we adapt to rapid changes in our surroundings over time. Additionally, it examines the concept of the landscape as home.
"Here, There, and Back Again" features a social-geographical space visualized through a series of graphite drawings, for example the work titled Attraction of Similarity and Difference. This series is generated by an interconnected exchange between human beings and the spaces they occupy, utilizing maps, blueprints, cinema, language, schematics, and other technical and structural visual data. By drawing from these impersonal yet everyday sources of information, the work offers insight into the fractured world we interact with. The layered abstractions in these drawings mirror our perceptions of these spaces, creating an experience that is both discomforting and alluring, much like our globalized relationships with one another.
A significant portion of this series began with collaging photographs taken in various locations across the United States, including California, Nevada, Wyoming, Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Vermont, and Florida. These digital photographs were printed using a large format printer, cut up, and reassembled into new collage pieces. The collages often have other drawn or painted media onto of the images.
The exhibition also features a large-scale performance-based drawing created during the opening reception. Artists Lydia Dildilian and Paden DeVita traced over a video projected onto a large piece of paper. The video was an edited film documenting the couple's travels across the USA for work, residencies, exhibitions, and family visits. Additionally, the exhibition includes installation elements such as hanging wire spheres containing various flora, fauna, and rocks collected from these diverse states.
Artist Note & Sourses: This body of work is made in collaboration with my partner Paden DeVita.
