INTO THE FRAY: a journey through ambient space
This series of paintings, drawings, and installations explores human perception of isolation, space, and time through landscape. Like levels of sediment, the work features transparent and opaque layered abstractions of land, superimposed on top of one another, creating new landscapes. The process mirrors the exploration of space when out for a walk or on a web browser, observing details, textures, shapes, patterns, scale, and colors both far and near. The landscape is constructed using appropriated images from National Geographic magazines, video game clippings, moon imagery, and previously unused collages. The act of building the surface mimics the action of building a place or space in one's mind, reviving and resurrecting an original stock image indefinitely. The landscapes made are alive, transmutable, and in a state of flux.
The moon imagery acts as a metaphor for understanding the land through time. Looking at both human time and cosmological time builds upon the theme of transmutability, an organic yet eternal state of change. The flora and fauna change rapidly, but land moves slowly if uninterrupted. Layers of information, scattered pictorial renderings, texture debris, silhouetted vegetation, as well as aberrations of color and shape present the landscape holistically over the course of time. Perceiving the development of time in the works conveys notions of chaos, uncertainty, and fragility. The constant act of observing time, land, and scapes simulates an honest depiction of viewing and seeing.
This series also reflects on isolation, as the creation of these landscapes is an introspective act. The solitary process of layering and building new worlds from disparate sources speaks to the experience of isolation, both physical and emotional. By isolating elements from their original contexts and recombining them, the work echoes the feelings of disconnection and the search for meaning within solitude. The landscapes, while vibrant and dynamic, underscore the profound sense of being alone with one's thoughts and perceptions.
